It’s Just Cannabis

Apr 17, 2020 | Gentlfolk Guide to Cannabis, Uncategorized

If you are a regular consumer of cannabis you are probably familiar with all of the slang used for it. Reefer, ganja, weed, pot, marijuana, the list goes on. You will also find that in our stores we don’t use slang, and instead stick to the use of the word cannabis almost exclusively. But why?

There is a long list of reasons, but there are two major reasons. The first is the more important to us, and that is the simple fact it’s the more scientific name for the plant. Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, Cannabis ruderalis, names you can probably recognize to a degree, are all types of cannabis plants, from which we derive our product. One of the main goals of our company is to use education and science to base our descriptions and retail space. We don’t want to reference pseudoscience or unsubstantiated studies when it comes to our work. Working with Lobo Genetics we can focus on the right products for you and your needs. By ensuring we use the scientific term for the plant, and not slang, we embody that through our whole journey.

The next one is a little more nuanced. The term marijuana is a bit of a contentious one. There are a lot of stories as to where it came from, where the origins of that word are, but one thing is certain, it has gotten a bad rep. Early in prohibition it was used as a dirty word, specifically to target minorities in the United States and Canada. During the War on drugs terms like reefer, pot, weed and ganja have been used to vilify communities and degrade people who consume the plant for reasons other than social. That’s not even taking into account the use of it in more racist terms during the Nixon administration.

So, our combination of socially conscious business ideals, and the desire to ensure we are only give you a science based and educated experience, you won’t hear us use any slang. After all, it’s only cannabis.
